Competency-Based Education
Competency-based learning is focused on student learning outcomes, and is built with the following design principles in mind:
1. Students advance upon mastery, not age.
2. The pathway to competency is built with explicit and measurable learning objectives.
3. Assessment is primarily formative, and skills or concepts are assessed in multiple contexts to guarantee both deep understanding and application.
Competency-based learning is a system of education, often referred to as proficiency or mastery-based, in which students advance and move ahead on their lessons based on demonstration of mastery. For students to progress at a meaningful pace, schools and teachers provide differentiated instruction and support.
Zia Public High School provides an activity-based teaching approach. As a result, students are more confident as they experience the practices of daily life.
